We’re George & Joseph, an independent cheesemonger in Chapel Allerton, Leeds. Since opening our first shop in 2013, we’ve been helping people discover wonderful cheese, the makers behind it and the pleasure of sharing it.
From a wedge for the weekend to a cheeseboard for a celebration, we’re here to help you choose something you’ll love.
A love of cheese that became a shop
George & Joseph began in 2012 with Stephen Fleming, a lifelong cheese enthusiast whose move to Leeds in 2001 sparked a particular love of Yorkshire cheeses and locally produced food.
After a year of fairs and farmers’ markets, Stephen opened our first shop in Chapel Allerton in 2013. In 2017, we moved around the corner to our larger home on Harrogate Road.
Today, Stephen and the team share that enthusiasm over the counter, through our online shop and at our tastings. Being part of Chapel Allerton’s community of independent businesses is a big part of who we are.
Good cheese starts with a conversation
Yorkshire cheeses have a special place on our counter, alongside British artisan favourites and discoveries from further afield. We care about how cheese is made, how it’s looked after and, above all, how it tastes.
Tell us what you enjoy and we’ll help you explore. That might mean finding a new favourite, choosing cheeses that work beautifully together, or sorting out the right quantities and accompaniments for your table. You don’t need to know the names or the terminology — curiosity is plenty.
More ways to enjoy cheese
Join us for a cheese tasting, explore G&J Cheese School, or keep the discoveries coming with a monthly cheese box.
We also put together hampers and gifts, corporate Christmas gifts and cheese for weddings and celebrations.
For something more personal, Stephen hosts private cheese tastings, drawing on experience with groups ranging from a few friends to corporate events with 200 guests.
