Produced by relatively new cheesemaker David Jowett at Kingstone Dairy, this was the first cheese he started producing when he set up King Stone Dairy in 2015. Following years of training in the UK and the US including time at Neal's Yard Dairy and Stichelton.
The creamery takes milk from a single herd at local farm Manor Farm which is less than a mile down the road, delivered fresh every morning. The farm has a mixed herd of traditional British Friesian and Shorthorn cows producing high quality organic milk. They are grass-fed on pastures with lots of clover and leys which gives the milk a beautiful rich flavour, perfect to make cheese with.
Evenlode is a small washed rind cheese with a bright orange rind and would be most similar in style to a French Munster or Epoisses. The pungent smelling cheese takes its beautifully deep orange colour from the bring solution which it is washed in repeatedly during the ageing process.
Younger Evenlodes are quite lactic at first but as they ripen they start to break down under the rind producing a very ripe deeply flavoured cheese with flavours of beef stock and onions! It is firmer in the centre with a runnier outer edge just under the rind.
Following in it's sister cheeses (Rollright's) footsteps with award-winning success having won Bronze at the 2018 British Cheese Awards. This is a delightful cheese, well worth the smell in your fridge, one for those who love gooey cheese.
Cheesemonger Emmanuelle recently made a Leek, Mushroom and Evenlode Tart - replacing Munster with Evenlode. The recipe is coming to our website soon.
